How to cancel Substack subscription
A paid Substack is cancelled on the web, not in the app: substack.com/settings → the publication → Manage subscription → cancel. Subscribed through the iOS app? Cancel with Apple.
Checked in October 2026 against Substack subscription’s own help pages. Substack subscription typically costs about €8 a month (€96 a year).
Cancel on the web
- Go to substack.com/settings and open the publication under Subscriptions.
- On its Manage subscription page use the cancel link in Account actions.
- Select Cancel subscription, pick a reason, and click through any offer such as a free month.
Subscribed in the app?
If you signed up inside the Substack subscription app on your phone, Apple or Google bills you, and only they can cancel it.
On an iPhone or iPad (billed by Apple)
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Substack subscription, then Cancel Subscription, and confirm.
Not listed there? Apple doesn’t bill you for it — use the steps above. If it’s listed under Expired, it’s already cancelled.
On Android (billed by Google Play)
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Tap Substack subscription, then Cancel subscription, and follow the prompts.
Deleting the app on either phone does not cancel anything.
What happens after you cancel
Paid perks last until the end of the period you've paid for, then you're a free subscriber who keeps the free posts. To undo before then, click Set to renew on the account page.
Refunds
Cancelling doesn't refund the current period.
Watch out for
- Each paid publication is cancelled on its own.
- You can pause instead for 1, 3 or 6 months, but only once every 6 months.
Make sure the charge really stops
Track Substack subscription in Cancely and mark it cancelled: the day before it would have renewed, you get a reminder to check your statement — so a cancellation that didn’t take doesn’t cost you another month.
