How to cancel GitHub Pro
GitHub Pro is cancelled by downgrading to Free: Settings → Billing and licensing → Additional billing details → Edit → Downgrade to Free.
Checked in October 2026 against GitHub Pro’s own help pages. GitHub Pro typically costs about €4 a month (€48 a year).
Cancel on the web
- On github.com open Settings → Billing and licensing → Additional billing details.
- Under Current plan open the Edit menu and choose Downgrade to Free.
Open GitHub Docs: Downgrading your account's plan ↗
What happens after you cancel
The plan doesn't change until your next billing date, and you can cancel a pending change from the same Current plan section. Afterwards the account loses advanced code review tools on private repositories.
Watch out for
- Copilot and GitHub Marketplace apps are billed separately — downgrading Pro doesn't cancel them.
- Published a Pages site from a private repository with a custom domain? Remove or update its DNS records first, to avoid a domain takeover.
- Removing your payment method cancels a paid subscription on its next renewal date.
Make sure the charge really stops
Track GitHub Pro in Cancely and mark it cancelled: the day before it would have renewed, you get a reminder to check your statement — so a cancellation that didn’t take doesn’t cost you another month.
